We were having mad technical difficulties the other night. The Facetime was on the fritz. Even the fritztime was on the face! Because of this, it was hard to sustain the witty between-song repartee that has become the calling card of the Cool & Shiny Radio Hour. In the unpredictable landscape of ersatz Internet radio, it has become increasingly more tricky to make technology bend to your bidding. Our friend, Neil, referred to us as, “pioneers”. We do try our best to make it all work. Two geographically-challenged, intrepid music-obsessives adrift on a vast sea of awesome, high-fidelity sonic jams with little to guide us but our instincts. Who needs know-how when we got derring-do?
Jason took a break to take his dog, Edie, for a walk. While I waited my mind wandered to the part in Keith Richards’s book, Life, where he and hedonist saxophone player, Bobby Keys, are late for a gig in Belgium. Keith finds Bobby back in the hotel room immersed - with a young lady friend - in a tub filled with Dom Perignon. When Keith tells Bobby it’s time to go to work, Bobby tells him to, “fuck off,“ and essentially gets himself sacked from the Stones.
“Damn,” I said aloud to myself, “Was it worth it, Bobby Keys?”
I have yet to receive a reply from Bobby. But I’m inclined to think that maybe it was in fact worth it. When Jason and Edie finally came back from their walk we dialed the attenuators for “infinity” and made sure all the signals were clipping. Before long, we had embarked on another Internet radio pilgrimage – Cool & Shiny, #4. The results are herein. I recommend you fill up the bathtub with your favorite prohibitively expensive beverage, grab a loved one and tune in at once. It’s time to go to work!
